I rolled into Colorado circa 1989 and was excited to discover the "Express Club" in Boulder and possibly Colorados first rave crew "Energy Posse" with DJ John Chamie involved.  Just a bit later the "Poor Boys" crew from San Diego relocated to Boulder and started to throw parties, with John as guest DJ.

I love all the DJs in Colorado and danced to everyones sets with much joy but John's sets touched me dearly by his warmth, soul, funk and unique take.  I was a big fan! Later I was introduced and he invited me to his pad for an IronFeather Journal interview.  I see him as a kind, intelligent, talented, international artist and learning that he has relocated to Berlin sounds perfect.  Bravo to mister Chamie!  Thanks for all the cool…

IRONFEATHER COMPENDIUM

Boxes of letters, graphics, art, flyers and other materials collected for the IronFeather  Journal zine since 1985 to be scanned and shared at archive.org during 2021.

Boxes of collected materials for my zine are destined for the recycle bin. New plan: scan it all. IRONFEATHER COMPENDIUM: letters, graphics, photos, art, flyers and other materials shared at archive.org during 2021. @internetarchive #zine #1980s

In the 1980s my hobby was to visit various local libraries in Michigan and look for books with interesting art & graphics, then hit the xerox shops and make tons of copies. Cut and paste them into collections for me to use in my zine IronFeather Journal. I have many boxes of these.

Asahidake foliage peaks

Asahidake.jpg

Tourists are enjoying the colorful autumn foliage at Mount Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

Every year, large crowds visit the mountain to see Japan's first autumn foliage of the season. The top of the mountain is nearly 2,300 meters above sea level.

The operator of a cable car service says the leaves started to change colors near the summit early this month as usual.

The best view can be seen from a cable car station about a half way up the peak. Visitors were taking pictures of the red and yellow foliage.

The first snow of the season on Asahidake was observed on Saturday, and snow now covers the mountaintop.

A woman from Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo says she is really impressed with the contrast of the red leaves and the snow.

The autumn foliage will remain through mid-October.

Health Alert - U.S. Embassy Tokyo (August 5, 2020)

Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Tokyo (August 5, 2020)
Location:           Japan
Date:                  August 5, 2020
State of COVID-19 Measures in JapanThe U.S. Embassy and consulates continue to monitor closely the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan.  Case numbers in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Okinawa, and in other areas across Japan have risen significantly in the past two weeks, and many prefectural officials are requesting residents comply with specific mitigation efforts centered around refraining from visiting nightlife establishments and other non-essential outings and travel.
In Okinawa, on July 31 Governor Tamaki implemented a state of emergency and requested that residents avoid non-essential outings.  He also urged residents to refrain from travel to mainland Japan and asked that travelers from outside Okinawa carefully consider whether they should travel to the islands.
In Hokkaido, on July 27 Governor Suzuki asked residents to carefully consider the necessity of travel outside of Hokkaido.
In Kyushu, some local governors including those in Miyazaki, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto have issued local guidelines or updated alert levels.
In Tokyo, Governor Koike continues to urge residents to avoid restaurants and other service establishments that lack proper infection-control and social distancing measures and has asked bars and restaurants to limit their hours.  She also requests that Tokyo residents refrain from crossing prefectural borders unless necessary.  More information on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s recommendations can found here.
In the Kansai area, including Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, COVID-19 cases have steadily increased.  New cases have mainly occurred in entertainment establishments, prompting Osaka Governor Yoshima to urge the public to limit gatherings to no more than 5 people and to increase

Good Vibration by Nicol Viljoen

"Good Vibrations" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys that was composed by Brian Wilson with lyrics by Mike Love. Released as a single on October 10, 1966, it was an immediate critical and commercial hit, topping record charts in several countries including the US and UK.

Here is an unique version of Good Vibrations, performed live on stage by High School student Nicol Viljoen, for The Yamaha Electone Organ 1970 Competition in Japan.

DJ Jackalope  [Orbis Magazine]

Greets! Recently I bought a mixer that supports USB out so I am starting to encode cassette mixtapes to MP3. Happy to share a mix by DJ Jackalope circa 1999. Jackalope (outa Ft. Collins) produced one of the longest running rave zines in Colorado called ORBIS. She was part of the original old skool mountain raves list, helped organize events, DJed parties and supported the underground scene and continues today to DJ, create, produce and be active in various underground scenes around the USA. Check out the banging side-A of her 1999 mixtape.

Cruising the ocean frontage roads of Tomakomai we stopped to admire this little garden paradise. The owner popped out to welcome us. He once owned a cabaret club in Chitose many years ago, now at 75 he is retired and his enjoyment is to create this garden so everyone can see. He collects the sun powered bobble head toys, he claims to have over 300. As we talked I enjoyed the sound of the surf pounding & fresh salty sea air. I want to go back and visit him, record his stories on tape and bring him a solar powered toy for his collection.

GREETS : Heyza, My name is Stevyn aka IronFeather. I was born in the year of the Horse in a small village in Scotland, UK back in the 1960's.    As a child, I grew up in the states , Georgia and Virginia then high schooled in New Hampshire.   I spent many of my favorite formative years as a barrista at both locations of Pennylane Coffeehouse in Boulder so if you made it there then we have probably met.

It was a crush to the people of Boulder when Pennylane Coffeehouse closed down. The place was a safe haven, a gathering of underground types, punks, hippies, artists, poets, musicians, travellers, university students and regular working joes.

The place was a focus of peoples lives, a community hub. Its closure was a vacuum,  missed by many.  Soon after, John opened up the Laughing Goat Cafe which became a huge success and though the new cafe hosted the weekly poetry readings, rotating art shows, underground music events it was not a replacement for Pennylane and John never intended to copy or replace, this was his own project.

A crew of the Pennylane kids, not young adults, had access to a plot of barren land near Lyons and opened the Anarchists Club & Cafe and advertized the opening night as a reunion for all Pennylane regulars. It was a weird place, no real building, just a square dirt lot surrounded by an 8 foot tall wooden privacy fence and one side open to a steep hill of the Rocky Mountain foothills.  The owners promoted guns and many people brought firearms.  It reminded me of a motorcycle gang party! I was happy to see many familiar faces. Punks and hippies, older men playing chess. People brought their children. It was festive, fun, phreaky. The policy I was excited about was the 90 minute drink all you can for $40. But after I paid and went to the cooler all I could I find were chilled glasses and many diet cokes. A man assured me they would replenish the beer in just a few…

Chitose Dam   千歳ダム

Fun hike to visit an 100 year old dam with historic brick building.  Park at the  水明郷パーキング  Suimeikyo parking lot  and walk the bike trail west towards the lake. Eventually you see an electric transformer station to the right. It is fenced off, avoid this of course. But right before it you will notice a deer trail. Follow the deer trail towards the river, you will reach a very steep embankment, look for the abandoned  (man made) old pack mule trail that has a winding path down the mountain. Follow it to the dam. Do not enter the building or walk on the dam, it has staff working and visiting.  Bring a picnic and enjoy the view.  You could follow the access road west to get back to the bike trail.  While in the forest look for deer antlers.

Konnichiwa, like to share some feel good stories from Hokkaido Japan. Few months ago I attended a music gig at a small cafe near my house. The party was most excellent. I have since returned to the cafe for food & coffee and was very surprised to learn the origin story. The owner is a Japanese woman, an artist, who about 8 years ago watched a film about a cute cafe in Helsinki Finland. The film is a good heart warming story. She was deeply touched and moved by the film so much that she re-created the cafe in my town, the feels, the vibes, the food, etc. I was just there today and had delicious food, great coffee and best of all, awesome people. The cafe is now celebrating 7 years of being open and is rocking out. Of course the virus situation has us all stressed and she only has very limited hours, maybe 2 afternoons a week open. It is wild as now after watching the film I really want to visit Finland. I am touched also. There is this mystery vibe connection tween Finland and my area, Hokkaido Japan. So strong that Finland Air even started weekly direct flights to my remote island. I was honored as the staff invited me to join them in the future when they will host board game nights. I think it is amazing that a person can watch a movie and be so inspired to try and bring that vibe to their own world and make it reality. It worked! So cheers to the artists who create such stirring works and cheers to the fans who admire and are deeply moved by such works ❤️
