This Guy Makes Bootleg Ayahuasca from Traditional Japanese Herbs
Despite its progressiveness and advancements in other areas of culture and life, Japan has fairly archaic drug laws. These draconian preventative measures are the country's response to the waves of amphetamine addiction it's grappled with since the end of WWII. First time offenders, regardless of the particular illegal drug they're caught with, face steep fines, years in prison, and an almost guaranteed shunning from friends, families, and employers upon their release.
With risks this severe, coupled with a steady stream of government disinformation, it's no wonder that a minuscule percentage of the Japanese population has experimented with illicit substances. While the more square elements of society might chalk these low usage figures up to a win, one Japanese man fears the laws and taboos surrounding drugs in Japan may actually be robbing his fellow citizens of certain benefits.
By concocting a replication of the notorious South American psychedelic drink, ayahuasca, using only traditional Japanese herbs and antidepressants, Aoi Glass claims to have found a legal loophole for providing an ayahuasca-like experience to the masses.
Glass has been moonlighting as pseudo-shaman in a quiet, suburban Tokyo neighborhood for more than three years. I visited his home last month to ask about the psychedelic services he provides.
Glass, a graduate of Hirosaki University's Agriculture Biotechnology department, told me he initially began his research into ayahuasca as part of an effort to treat his friends' depression, after several acquaintances lost their jobs.
"I started by smoking all the random grass seeds I found on the street for three years and writing down the effects. Also with random mushrooms and leaves," he explained. "Then I studied ayahuasca for one year. He continues to produce works vigorously, such as holding solo exhibitions several times a year in Tokyo and Sapporo. 11 points depicting the scene of memories in the back of their heart, entitled "Place of that day" is displayed. Japan, U.S. to aim for stronger cyberdefenses in upcoming security talks

Japan and the United States are expected to agree in bilateral security talks next week to strengthen their defenses against cyberattacks, a diplomatic source said Saturday, apparently with North Korea and China in mind.
Expanded cooperation is expected to be stipulated in a joint statement to be issued after a “two-plus-two” security meeting of their foreign and defense chiefs in Washington on Thursday, the source said.
As cyberattacks pose a serious threat to national security, Japan and the United States aim to bolster measures to prevent any leak of classified information, including that on state-of-the-art weapons, and to protect essential communication and transport infrastructure, the source said.
Bolstering cybersecurity as well as ballistic missile defense in light of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs will be the priority issues, the source said.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have surged since North Korea twice tested intercontinental ballistic missiles last month. That led to the United States and North Korea trading threats to take military action, including Pyongyang’s threat to fire four ballistic missiles toward the U.S. Pacific territory of Guam, and U.S. President Donald Trump’s vow that the North Korean leader “will truly regret it” if he follows through.
The Japanese and U.S. governments will agree during the two-plus-two meeting, the first since Trump took office in January, on the need to tackle cyberattacks in a comprehensive manner.
Via the U.S.-Japan Cyber Defense Policy Working Group, a dialogue framework for defense officials, the two governments are expected to agree to share more information, carry out joint drills and train experts to deal with cyberattacks, the source said.
