High Street Kensington markets in London 1982

phaze-poster-1.jpg

PHAZE Clothing UK 1980's. On my high school trip we visited the UK during the Spring of 1982 and on my student "free time" I drank Carlsberg Special Brews and explored the High Street Kensington markets in London and discovered a stall selling these t-shirts. Just scanned in this poster tonight and wanted to share. I also have a 500M .tif available if you want for printing or better examination. I bought their "zip jacket" and dream of reproducing it in Japan, seeking a local pattern maker❤ Can you guess what shirt I bought? don't try 🙂 Cheers & hope you have a great day.

Denver : I heard news that Carbone's Italian Deli on 38th closed.  Maybe in 2013?  As I grew up east coast, a good sub was vital and Colorado lacks this but Carbone's was the real deal, was where I went as much as possible.  I remember how engaging matriarch Rosa was to me and everyone waiting in line.  The joy of unwrapping that white butcher paper and enjoying the heavenly sandwich ❤️

WFNX radio: 1989 excerpts

cassette-sca-small.jpg

GREETS!  When I lived close to Boston MA (USA) one joy was to listen to WFNX radio FM.  The DJs were playing alternative, weird, cool new stuff.  So I made an attempt to try and listen and with my finger on the record button of my cassette recorder to capture my favorite tracks they played. This is raw, rough, just a sampling of what I heard on WFNX radio and I am pleased to share this as a MP3 archive.

This was recorded 1989…

Notes:

  • The cassette starts off with an advert for the MANRAY dance club. I enjoyed going there (1989) for the NEW BEAT music.
  • The end of the cassette features a recording of phone phreaks voice mail, announcing that his BBS crashed.
  • SIDE B is recordings from Yo! MTV Raps

Kushiro Hokkaido Man Killed by Bear

Close to 11 a.m. on April 10, a resident of Kushiro City in Hokkaido who had traveled to the mountains to pick edible flora with his wife was attacked by a brown bear and died shortly after. Though his wife called emergency services as soon as she heard her husband scream and witnessed him being attacked by a “black, bear-like animal”, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death appeared to be the crushing of his head and throat.

Though the emergency services who arrived at the scene were unable to locate the animal responsible, this is unfortunately not an especially unexpected occurrence. Experts warn that bears that have just woken up from hibernation are the most likely to encounter humans, as they wander further afield in search of food. Adding to this peril is the fact that brown bear populations are on the rise in Hokkaido, which increases the risk of an encounter.

In the wake of this unfortunate incident, a representative of the Hokkaido Hunting Association expressed his anguish at it happening despite reports of bear sightings in the area and went on to share advice for bear encounters in general.

First, he dismissed the effectiveness of bear bells, small bells that jingle as you walk, and said that their only true purpose was to give their wearers peace of mind. In actuality he says that the bells ring so quietly they tend not to be audible to bears until it’s too late, meaning a better course of action is to walk loudly and speak in strong, clear voices to ensure that a bear doesn’t accidentally stumble upon you.

Of course, he concedes, this doesn’t stop bears from encountering you anyway. And in that instance, the only advice he can really offer is to be willing to fight for your life.

While tools like bear repellents can be useful, it’s unlikely that in the moment you will have the presence of mind or quick reflexes to pull out the safety pin to activate one. It…

Firefly - Serenity - music mix

Mix produced for the Equality Now Charity Event 2007.  I used many samples & music from the film & tv shows but also mixed in stuff from other sci-fi shows so purists be warned. Hope you enjoy.

After the event was finished I relocated and this mix was forgotten, not shared til now. While dumping data from an old hard drive I found these samples and the rendered mix created in Abelton Live.

I rolled into Colorado circa 1989 and was excited to discover the "Express Club" in Boulder and possibly Colorados first rave crew "Energy Posse" with DJ John Chamie involved.  Just a bit later the "Poor Boys" crew from San Diego relocated to Boulder and started to throw parties, with John as guest DJ.

I love all the DJs in Colorado and danced to everyones sets with much joy but John's sets touched me dearly by his warmth, soul, funk and unique take.  I was a big fan! Later I was introduced and he invited me to his pad for an IronFeather Journal interview.  I see him as a kind, intelligent, talented, international artist and learning that he has relocated to Berlin sounds perfect.  Bravo to mister Chamie!  Thanks for all the cool…

IRONFEATHER COMPENDIUM

Boxes of letters, graphics, art, flyers and other materials collected for the IronFeather  Journal zine since 1985 to be scanned and shared at archive.org during 2021.

Boxes of collected materials for my zine are destined for the recycle bin. New plan: scan it all. IRONFEATHER COMPENDIUM: letters, graphics, photos, art, flyers and other materials shared at archive.org during 2021. @internetarchive #zine #1980s

In the 1980s my hobby was to visit various local libraries in Michigan and look for books with interesting art & graphics, then hit the xerox shops and make tons of copies. Cut and paste them into collections for me to use in my zine IronFeather Journal. I have many boxes of these.

Asahidake foliage peaks

Asahidake.jpg

https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200928_31/

Tourists are enjoying the colorful autumn foliage at Mount Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

Every year, large crowds visit the mountain to see Japan's first autumn foliage of the season. The top of the mountain is nearly 2,300 meters above sea level.

The operator of a cable car service says the leaves started to change colors near the summit early this month as usual.

The best view can be seen from a cable car station about a half way up the peak. Visitors were taking pictures of the red and yellow foliage.

The first snow of the season on Asahidake was observed on Saturday, and snow now covers the mountaintop.

A woman from Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo says she is really impressed with the contrast of the red leaves and the snow.

The autumn foliage will remain through mid-October.

Health Alert - U.S. Embassy Tokyo (August 5, 2020)

Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Tokyo (August 5, 2020)
Location:           Japan
Date:                  August 5, 2020
State of COVID-19 Measures in JapanThe U.S. Embassy and consulates continue to monitor closely the COVID-19 outbreak in Japan.  Case numbers in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Okinawa, and in other areas across Japan have risen significantly in the past two weeks, and many prefectural officials are requesting residents comply with specific mitigation efforts centered around refraining from visiting nightlife establishments and other non-essential outings and travel.
In Okinawa, on July 31 Governor Tamaki implemented a state of emergency and requested that residents avoid non-essential outings.  He also urged residents to refrain from travel to mainland Japan and asked that travelers from outside Okinawa carefully consider whether they should travel to the islands.
In Hokkaido, on July 27 Governor Suzuki asked residents to carefully consider the necessity of travel outside of Hokkaido.
In Kyushu, some local governors including those in Miyazaki, Nagasaki, and Kumamoto have issued local guidelines or updated alert levels.
In Tokyo, Governor Koike continues to urge residents to avoid restaurants and other service establishments that lack proper infection-control and social distancing measures and has asked bars and restaurants to limit their hours.  She also requests that Tokyo residents refrain from crossing prefectural borders unless necessary.  More information on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s recommendations can found here.
In the Kansai area, including Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, COVID-19 cases have steadily increased.  New cases have mainly occurred in entertainment establishments, prompting Osaka Governor Yoshima to urge the public to limit gatherings to no more than 5 people and to increase

Good Vibration by Nicol Viljoen

"Good Vibrations" is a song by the American rock band the Beach Boys that was composed by Brian Wilson with lyrics by Mike Love. Released as a single on October 10, 1966, it was an immediate critical and commercial hit, topping record charts in several countries including the US and UK.

Here is an unique version of Good Vibrations, performed live on stage by High School student Nicol Viljoen, for The Yamaha Electone Organ 1970 Competition in Japan.
