I use this small script in all my machines. I called it "uac" = Update And Clean.
This removes old kernels but keep the last one to go back if something goes wrong with the update.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get autoclean
sudo apt-get autoremove
dpkg -l | grep '^rc' | awk '{print $2}' > config_list.txt
if [ -s config_list.txt ]
sudo xargs dpkg --purge < config_list.txt
if [ -f /var/run/reboot-required ]; then
echo '**** reboot required ****'
