    3rd Annual Denver Zine Fest
    May 31st
    10am-6pm
    First Unitarian Church
    1400 Lafayette Street
    Denver, CO 80218

Denver Zine Fest announces 3rd Annual Gathering

Iron Feather Bookstore and Denver Zine Library two of Denver's most enthusiastic supporters of underground publishing in Denver are pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Denver Zine Fest, May 31st from 10 am – 6pm at First Unitarian Church in Denver. The church will be filled with self-publishers vending their zines, comix and projects. Throughout the day, volunteers will run free workshops and demonstrations offering how-to instruction on cartooning, screenprinting and of course, zine-making. The Fest is open to the public and free to attend.

“Zine” (pronounced “zeen”) is an abbreviation of magazine; any self-published small press publication often a photocopied and hand-bound booklet falls under this category. The Denver Zine Fest promotes the spirit of Do-It-Yourself publishing, as well as independent thought and expression. This event also serves as a gathering for the zine community, which relies primarily on mail to communicate and distribute materials. The Denver Zine Fest aims to be a day of showcasing, selling, trading, and collaboration for zinesters, poets, comic book artists and readers alike.

Last year, the Denver Zine Fest was held in March at Andenken Gallery’s former location at 21st & Market. Over 700 people attended the fest, which featured zine writers and artists from Denver and beyond.

Some of this years’ vendors include local cartoonists such as Patrick Keck, Lonnie Allen and Stan Yan, Growler Distro: a local distributor of independent music & zines, John Porcellino of the fifteen year old King Cat Comix, The Project, a zine composed of writings by Denver youth, Ironfeather Journal, Mixtro Distro and and many more to be announced.

Throughout the day, volunteers will lead workshops and skillshare demonstrations on topics ranging from how to conduct an interview to silk-screening to cartooning.

Denver Zine Fest has also teamed up with the Underground Carrot, who will be selling an array of tasty vegetarian foods.

Zine Fests have been popularized in cities like Portland, Philadelphia, and Madison, and Denver is quickly becoming a central spot on the map of the circuit that draws zinesters away from their typewriters to swap projects and strengthen the underground community that they share.

The radio show was broadcast live on KGNU radio Feb 25, 2008. The archive is only about for two weeks and then it is removed.

WOW!!! What a phucking wonderful show!!!

    * Hyapatia Lee:  Live phone call in from the beautiful film star Hyapatia Lee. The Canterbury Tales are such a historical source of sexuality and Hypatia Lee introduced such erotica to Kelly and I via film circa late 1980's in Manchester NH.  Skip foward to 2008 and Kelly and I are so giddy to be speaking to our heroine on the radio show, Hyapatia Lee!  What does this film star do these days? She is an activist! How cool!

    * Dr. Meg: Live in studio response to emails and phone calls, Dr. Meg provided special care to those whose deserved so much better, well, ack, maybe not, maybe they deserved the odd coaching advice our wise in house doctor of chaos provided. Dr. Meg was in studio in Boulder and answered many perplexing questions that listeners sent in, listen to the show for her enlightened and uplifting answers to their issues, as she may aide us all with her wisdom.

    * LATCH: ".... a 4-piece original rock band from Louisville, Colorado. Pulling influences from bands like Fugazi, Janes Addiction, Sonic Youth & Radiohead, Latch puts forth a full and gritty texture of sounds. Latch plays to a range of audiences focusing on a style of intensely passionate bass-driven rock, hypnotizing drums beats and sustaining guitar. Our strength lies in our writing, and translates well to live environments and improv multimedia shows..."

Yes, these guys are totally on top and I am excited to have them on today! I hope a million people listened in and enjoy, relax, dance and jump about to the LATCH as I am.

yay!  It is wild as a see an international psychedelic rock revolution happing and so cool that the LATCH bring it home, live, in the studio at KGNU. Thanks so much to the guys for all their work & talent and sharing it with us.

Brian Swartz: The manager of Jeffery Lewis, Dinosaur Jr, Scroobious Pip vs. Dan le Sac and many other awesome bands takes some tyme off to hang out in the studio and play some awesome new records with us that he has collected in his global wanderings. His HQ? Boulder! Good stuff from a good guy! Listen in!

Wow! I am so excited and soaring on the natural high of doing live radio and my rare dose of coffee also i suppose. I have been working for weeks on collecting the special musics and making the contacts that I presented today. It is amazing how many hours I spend just to produce three hours of radio! I also do everything on the spot, no playlists ever, I guess that is from my club DJ background which means playing for the crowd. I had such a nice day! Sigh. Last night I stayed up til wee hours making sure the songs were "clean" and giving them an edit if not. The music is incredible!

Thank you so much to the in studio artists Andrea Ball and Yuzo Nieto who shared such great musics!!! Thank you also to my wonderful guests Dr. Meg who makes my show so perfectly zaney with her constructive or should I say destructive advice. Shouts to Adam co-organizer of the Denver's Louis Vuitton Night shows and of course mega thanks to Hannah Jack, John Shaeffer, Alex Fountain and Mel for studio support. I also want to thank the sweet people who emailed, called and listened to the show. Big ups to all KGNU radio listener members as you make the whole thing happen! yay!

In my typical fashion I arrived late to the show, my laptop rig was acting up and I was getting a bit alarmed that the majority of my music would be unavailable or at least not as convieniently mixed as I would like but suddenly I discovered the technical problem and fixed it. Things were good. I worked with 2 turntables, 3 ceedee players and the laptop pluged into the AUX.  Somehow (static electricty) we fried one MIC which we worked around.

Dr. Meg joined us at the studio looking ever so sweet and beautiful. I don't know if I should be intimidated by her intelligence or her beauty so I try my best to pretend I am a peer. We are nice friends so it all works out just fine and dandy luckily and I am so proud to have her involved in my radio show as her funny & creative work totally fits into my theme, humour and presentation.  Sigh. THANK YOU MEG!! You so rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yuzo showed up and his unique energy filled the studio. The guy is just absolutely amazing and so talented it shines through his sleepy demeanor. I think  all of us will be blessed with much more incredible music & art from this special man. He is a bright star in Colorado! Totally on top!!!

Andrea arrived looking beautiful in her black dress and yet slightly flustered from having a car with a flat tire to deal with on the way to the radio station and other mercury in retro misfortunes but she gracefully laughed it off and presented some very beautiful tracks. Pure magick. I see global appeal for her music.

Towards the end of the show Adam (of the Louis Vuitton Nights held every month in Colorado) joined us for a nice gossip session that you have to hear.

It was tons of phun and the music I played was eclectic, super kingy new and also old obscure classics I hope amuse, thrill and entertain you.

Listen to the MP3 link I have posted so handily and let me know what you think

I welcome your comments and also your participation in future shows, don't be shy!

    Cheers & hugs

Where: The Underground house, 2336 S. Downing Denver

    When: 8pm, Wednesday, December 19th.

    1. Please, please do not come empty handed!! In order for this to work, and for everyone to leave with something cool, you must bring at least one item.

    2. You can bring art, supplies, or both. You may be wondering what qualifies as art and the rule is....well, pretty much anything tangible. It's not limited to just paintings. You can bring homemade clothes and tees, zines, books, toys, instruments...anything. If you want to get really creative, you can make a book of IOUs or coupons for your services if you are, for example, a dancer, actor, performance artist, sculptor with a piece too big to bring, or anyone else whose creativity can't materialize at the swap.

    3. Supplies, also, don't stop at paintbrushes and paints. Bring your blank canvases, box of scrap metal, notebook, sketchbook, clay, yarn, hot glue gun, googly eyes, film...anything that can be made into something qualifies as a supply! As long as you can trade it, you're good.

    4. This event is ALL AGES and FREE. Unfortunately, if we do get beer, we will not be able to serve you if you are under 21. Donations welcome.

Bring a friend and support the Denver DIY culture.
